Cross-industry collaborations between musicians and designers have become a fixture in fashion, but Travis Scott and Rick Owens have broken new ground on a bespoke backstage furniture concept. The end result is a highly functional and modular structure – an extension of the rapper’s world-building for his Utopia album. “I envisioned a space that feels like an extension of my brain,” Scott noted in conversation with Architectural Digest. “Something comfortable and all-encompassing. I like to record, watch movies, chill, have conversations. I wanted it to be all in one.”Dubbed the “Tech Glade,” the lounge-studio hybrid is made of rearrangeable seating units upholstered in black French wool army blankets. Together the pieces, constructed from Batipan plywood, form a dimly lit canopy over seat cushions at the base of each. French producer Damien Quintard, who's worked with Scott and artists like Justin Bieber and Sade, was brought in to design a studio area neatly integrated into the structure so that Scott could work on the road. Each lounge component can be easily deconstructed and reconfigured as the tour makes stops in new cities.Michèle Lamy, the long-time creative partner of Owens, designed the original “Glade,” — an upholstered furniture piece that Lamy told Architectural Digest calls to mind “grassy meadows under [a] canopy of delicious trees” — in 2019. The reimagination of the upholstered furniture piece came organically as a continuation of the work that began on Scott’s 2024 SNL performance, which featured Owens’s brutalist-style Pompidou bed in black, as well as Rick Owens clothing worn by the rapper. The “Tech Glade” will remain on tour with Scott until the end of October, after which it will be displayed at a forthcoming Rick Owens Furniture exhibition at Salon 94 in New York City. The 2025 exhibition will also include new Rick Owens Furniture pieces, existing Owens pieces in new materials, and audio-visual work by the designer. Details about the show are available at Salon 94.

As companies continue to push AI as anything from a web designer to the equivalent of a whole film studio, one of its more tried-and-true use cases has been as a personal secretary and, more specifically, a stenographer. Apple and Google are adding AI-generated transcripts to your phone calls, and now, the ability’s coming to your office, too.
Technically, AI transcripts have been part of work culture for a while, through third-party sites like Otter.ai and, more recently, even video calling apps like Zoom or Google Meet themselves. The idea is to have the AI take notes during your call, so you can be fully present in your meeting, or so people who missed it can quickly get back up to speed. Unfortunately, the reality’s been a little more limited than that, but now Slack is looking to give more detailed AI meeting notes than the competition.

Hiroshi Fujiwara's fragment design has joined forces with the professional Japanese mahjong coalition, M.League, to create a series of goods to help propel the tile game's popularity.M.League tapped fragment design for the collaboration to "make mahjong more accessible to more people and establish it as a brain sport." The traditional Chinese game involves matching tiles — modeled after bamboo stricks, dragons, flowers and more — to form sets and pairs. Notably, M.League is the "first ever national team mahjong league in which top mahjong professionals compete against each other to claim supremacy."In practice, a dual-branded electric mahjong tabel leads the collaboration, arriving in all black with an instant point storage system, an automatic deal function, a dice box simulator and the speed-maximizing AMOS REXX III system. Additionally, the collection includes mahjong tiles made from urea resin (in both navy and gray sets) that boast original designs by Fujiwara, and an entire accessory set, which features a binder, score sheet, calculator and ballpoint pen decorated with both labels' iconography. This collection is currently available for pre-order, with prices ranging from ¥5,500 JPY to ¥1,485,000 JPY via ABEMA's webstore. Deliveries are expected to begin in January 2025. Take a look at the designs in the gallery above.

Kyoto has long served as the cultural heartbeat of Japan going back centuries. Millions of tourists descend on the city each year to enjoy its Edo-style architecture, age-old onsens, historic Shinto temples and artisanal teahouses with some of the finest blends found anywhere in the world. Mixing heritage with modernity, Ogata at The Shinmonzen is a new teahouse nestled into a boutique hotel designed by master architect Tadao Ando that merges traditional Japanese tea sensibilities through a contemporary lens. The minimalist space is founded by Shinichiro Ogata, who helms a similar hybrid teahouse-salon-restaurant in a chic 17th century hotel in Paris' Marais district. Ogata's Kyoto flagship upholds a minimalist design aesthetic, emphasizing the relationship between natural and manmade materials, accentuated by swaths of natural light to emit an ethereal and contemplative atmosphere throughout. Ogata will offer traditional wagashi sweets alongside a curated selection of tea leaves, ceramic homeware and fragrances. "I created ten blends in pursuit of the possibilities of Japanese tea for people around the world to enjoy in their daily lives," said Ogata in a statement. "The blends not only reveal the myriad flavors of Japanese tea, but each was created with intention and a proposal of how to enjoy them. There are more invigorating blends to start the day, others I recommend to pair with meals, and even a tea to calm the mind in the evening."Ando designed the space to reflect Kyoto's gridded streets, with one half featuring natural stone sourced from Japan's southernmost island, Kyushu, along with a more regimented section that houses goods and accessories. Over the past several years, countless websites have added paywalls. If you want to read their articles, you have to sign up and pay a monthly subscription cost. Some sites have a “metered” paywall—meaning you can read a certain number of articles for free before they ask for money—and others have a hard paywall, where you’ll have to pay to read even one article.
Paywalls are mostly an thing with news websites, largely because relying on advertising income alone isn’t a viable strategy anymore, and news companies are pursuing more direct revenue sources, like monthly subscriptions. Of course, paywalls aren’t entirely a bad thing—it’s worth it to support journalism you find valuable, so by all means, if you can afford to pay to read articles, you absolutely should. But whether you lost your password, haven’t saved it on your phone, are in a rush, or are just strapped for cash and promise yourself that you’ll subscribe later, there are several ways to bypass paywalls on the internet.

Marshmallow Laser Feast has joined forces with Johnnie Walker to explore the innovation within glassmaking, creating an installation at the London Design Festival titled "Liquid Light". Located inside The Old Selfridges Hotel, the installation is made up of hundreds of blown glass droplets suspended seemingly in mid-air. "We wanted to create an experience that celebrates the delicate balance between strength and fragility, and fully immerses audiences in a rich history of design: a story written in glass," says Barnaby Steel, creative director at Marshmallow Laser Feast. Brought to life through the use of light and shadows, the static installation becomes a dynamic and immersive experience for visitors, accompanied by a musical score. "Seen a certain way, storytelling originates as shaped breath, undulations in air pressure leave the lips to arrive at an ear as language," Steel continued. "The glass blowing process has its own language, gravity, liquid glass and human breath meet in a frozen form, like words suspended in time and space."For Johnnie Walker, the installation features themes linked to their landmark launch, also taking place during the design festival – a new whisky bottle, which they claim to be the "world's lightest" at just 180 grams. "This new, lightweight bottle is a thing of exquisite beauty; but more importantly, it demonstrates what ispossible when it comes to lightweighting glass," said Jennifer English, Johnnie Walker's Global Brand Director Liquid Light is open from September 14 to 22, as part of the wider London Design Festival. If you’re extremely online, you may have heard about the brewing generational argument over “laptop purchases” versus “phone purchases.” The basic concept is simple: Online shopping using your phone is fine for smaller, everyday purchases, but for bigger things—like airline tickets, or appliances—you should use a laptop. It’s usually framed as a gap between Generation Z and Millennials, with the latter insisting that certain transactions are “laptop purchases” and the former mocking them by posting about buying a house on their phone while lying on the couch.
Depending on your age, you probably have a gut reaction to this—the idea of buying a plane ticket on my phone makes me break out into a sweat, for example. But there are actually some very solid reasons why you should make larger purchases using your computer, and not your phone.

"In four years, we've worked on more showrooms than Knoll had done in 20 years," said Jonathan Olivares, who has served as the SVP of design at Knoll – another of the Miller Knoll brands – since 2022. Now, they can call Clerkenwell their London home, as they open the doors to a permanent location inside a 1960s modernist building named "The Sans". Spanning three floors, the location features seperate showrooms and retail spaces from Knoll, Herman Miller, and Maharam. Views of the historical St Johns Gate are visible from the huge windows, which flood the space with natural light.
“This is truly an exciting milestone for our collective," Andi Owen, CEO of MillerKnoll said. "We’re thrilled to showcase the full breadth of our design portfolio in such [a] creative and innovative location in London." A huge selling point of the new location, Owen says, is its proximity to the other standalone stores of the MillerKnoll brands. "We’re taking the approach of locating brands next to each other based on feedback from design partners, dealers and customers. We look forward to the collaboration these spaces will facilitate as we continue to redefine modern design," she adds. For the opening, MillerKnoll took the opportunity to showcase new products, as well as pieces they have recently reissued – from the Luva sofa by Gabriel Tan, to the iconic Tugendhat Chair.
