Closely following the launch of the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV, the company has now announced that it will also launch the regular EQS SUV in India on September 16. This will be the brand’s sixth EV in its lineup, and will be positioned between the EQE and Maybach EQS SUVs.
EQS SUV likely to be offered in 580 4Matic spec
Interior gets the same Hyperscreen setup as the Maybach EQS
Gets up to 643km range in 580 4Matic spec
Mercedes EQS SUV exterior details
The exterior draws heavily on the smooth-surfaced design that has characterised all EQ models so far. Key styling elements include a blanked-off black panel grille that extends well into the lower section of the front bumper, angular LED headlights, and a horizontal LED light bar across the leading edge, all of which provide a clear family resemblance to other EQ models.
Compared to the Maybach EQS, the regular SUV gets far less chrome, especially on the face. It will also miss out on the Maybach’s characteristic dual-tone paint scheme along with the deep-dish alloy wheels. Mercedes could offer the EQS SUV with the AMG Line package that brings sportier front and rear bumpers.
At 5,125mm in length, 1,959mm in width, and 1,718mm in height, the EQS SUV is 82mm shorter, a scant 3mm wider and 105mm lower than the Mercedes-Benz GLS SUV.
Mercedes EQS SUV interior and features
Given that Mercedes offers the EQE SUV in 500 4Matic spec in India, the EQS SUV will likely be brought in 580 4Matic spec. This variant gets the Hyperscreen setup as standard which comprises a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, 17.7-inch central infotainment and 12.3-inch front passenger screens in one expansive surface. It also gets optional head-up display with augmented reality navigation.
The Maybach EQS is offered in either 5- or 4-seater configurations in India, but what’s interesting about the regular EQS is that it even gets an optional 7-seater variant, although legroom and kneeroom are at a premium for adults.
Maserati EQS SUV powertrain, specs and range
The EQS SUV draws power from a 118kWh lithium-ion battery pack. In 580 4Matic guise, the dual electric motors on each axle make it all-wheel drive, and it has a combined output of 544hp and 858Nm of peak torque. Mercedes claims a 0-100kph sprint time of 4.7 seconds and a top-speed of 210kph.
The EQS 580 4Matic has a claimed range of 643km on a single charge. Using a fast 200kW DC charger, the battery can be juiced up from 10 to 80 percent in 31 minutes. Meanwhile, using a regular 7.4kW AC charger, the battery can be topped up from 0 to 100 percent in 18.5 hours.
The EQS SUV will likely sit above the flagship EVs from rival brands such as the BMW iX and Audi e-tron SUV given that the EQE SUV is already positioned against them.

New VW SUV will be around four meters long
Will sit on MQB A0 platform designed for emerging markets
Prototype likely to be revealed soon
Volkswagen A0 Compact SUV: what is it?
This new SUV will likely be called the “Volkswagen Yeh” upon debut; currently it is referred to as the Volkswagen A0 SUV internally. A prototype of this SUV will debut in Brazil in the coming days.
This new SUV will be based on the MQB-A0 platform for emerging markets that underpins a slew of models globally including the current-gen Polo, the Nivus SUV and also the T-Cross sold in the South American market.
This platform is similar to the MQB-A0-IN architecture that underpins the Volkswagen Taigun and Virtus and also the Skoda Kushaq and Slavia in India. The upcoming Skoda Kylaq SUV will also be underpinned by the MQB-A0-IN platform.
The Volkswagen A0 SUV will have a 2.5 meter long wheelbase and overall length will likely be around 4 meters. It will get design cues seen on newer Volkswagen models that feature a silmmer grille with a tall bumper along with connected tail lamp setup at the back. The SUV will have a coupe-like roofline, unlike the Taigun which has a more upright profile.
Expect more details on powertrain, tech and features to surface once the prototype is revealed.

General Motors and Hyundai Motor Company have signed an agreement to explore future collaboration across key multiple strategic areas. As part of this agreement, both brands will jointly look for ways to leverage their strengths and scale in pursuit for cost reduction and bring a wider range of vehicles and customers faster.
Both brands will explore joint vehicle development
Will also see opportunities for joint powertrain development
Plans to work on clean energy will be explored too
GM Hyundai JV: what’s the plan?
Both brands will explore potential collaboration projects on joint development and production of passenger and commercial vehicles, internal combustion engine and clean energy, EV and hydrogen powered vehicles. Both brands will also review opportunities for combined sourcing in areas such as battery raw materials, steel and other areas.
The framework agreement was signed by Hyundai Motor Group executive chairman Euisun Chung and GM Chair and CEO Mary Barra. Barra said a partnership between the two companies has the potential to make vehicle development more efficient by driving greater scale and supporting disciplined capital allocation.
“GM and Hyundai have complementary strengths and talented teams. Our goal is to unlock the scale and creativity of both companies to deliver even more competitive vehicles to customers faster and more efficiently,” said Barra.
“This partnership will enable Hyundai Motor and GM to evaluate opportunities to enhance competitiveness in key markets and vehicle segments, as well as drive cost efficiencies and provide stronger customer value through our combined expertise and innovative technologies,” said Chung.
Following the signing of the non-binding Memorandum of Understanding, assessment of opportunities and progression towards binding agreements will begin immediately.
General Motors in India: a backgorund
In its last innings, GM started building cars in India in 1996 at its Halol plant in Gujarat. The brand also had a second plant at Talegon that started operations a little later. In 2017, GM decided to consolidate its India operations and stopped manufacturing vehicles at Halol, making Talegon its only plant in India for domestic and exports. The Halol plant, subsequently was taken over by MG Motor India. GM exited India in December 2020 and shut down its Talegon plant where it was building the Chevrolet Beat Essentia sedan for export markets.
The Talegaon plant was to be taken over by Great Wall motors but the plan hit a speed breaker due to geopolitical tensions between India and China. Later on Hyundai India went ahead and took over the erstwhile GM Talegon pant where the Korean brand will start building cars from next year. The first model to roll out from the new Hyundai Talegon plant is likely to be the next-gen Hyundai Venue SUV.

After revamping its entry-level C3 line-up globally, Citroen has now shifted focus on readying its flagship next-gen C5 Aircross SUV. Next-gen C5 Aircross: What do the spy shots show?
These spy shots have been captured near Spain by our friends at Motor.es. At first glance, it appears the test mule is wearing the same body as the existing C5 Aircross, but a closer look reveals new underpinnings. First up, the battery pack is clearly visible, jutting out from under the car between the front and the rear axles. Secondly, at the back, the standard C5 Aircross has an exhaust pipe which is missing on this test mule.
The spotted test mule is undergoing early stage platform and powertrain testing. The new C5 Aircross will sit on the new STLA medium platform developed by parent company Stellantis. This modular platform also underpins the Peugeot e3008 and the Opel Grandland electric SUV. '
The battery pack is visible jutting out from under the car.
The final bodyshell of the new C5 Aircross has not been seen yet, but we expect the new SUV to continue with its upright looks for added practicality. There are talks of the new eC5 getting a three-row variant as well.
As for the powertrain, the new eC5 Aircross will likely get an 86kWh battery with a 400V architecture. Expected WLTP range for the flagship Citroen electric SUV will be around 500km. There are talks of the line-up consisting both single motor and dual motor AWD setups.
Global debut for the new eC5 Aircross is slated to take place sometime next year. In India, Citroen sells the current C5 Aircross as a CKD model, and the same can be expected for the next-gen SUV as well.

Honda electric scooter for India: details
Some months ago, we reported that Honda has set up an exclusive production line at its Karnataka plant for electric two-wheelers. Production of the Honda e-scooter for India is slated to begin in December 2024, ahead of its March 2025 launch.
Very little is known about what the Honda electric scooter, including its name, which the internet speculates will be called the Activa electric. Capitalising on the humongous market share of the Activa will be Honda’s intention but whether it does so in such an outright manner remains to be seen.

There are also no details available on the powertrain front for the Honda e-scooter. Currently, only the Vida V1 duo offer removable batteries, with every other mainstream Indian e-scooter coming with a fixed battery pack. Honda already has a small network of battery-swapping stations functional in select metro cities so it remains to be seen what route the manufacturer goes down.
At a press conference last year, Honda revealed that it was working on two electric scooters for India, one with a fixed battery pack and the other with a swappable one. It remains to be seen which product reaches the market first and when the other one will follow.

I am considering buying the new Hyundai Alcazar facelift, but I am confused whether to opt for the petrol or diesel engine. What’s strange is that both variants are priced exactly the same for each trim. My monthly running is about 1200km, so fuel efficiency is a priority. Please advise.

Autocar India says: The new Hyundai Alcazar is a very well-equipped SUV with particular focus on rear seat comfort. It gets ventilated rear seats, fold out tray tables, a boss mode function and even extendable thigh support. However, Hyundai has skipped on one nicety in the diesel variants – the panoramic sunroof.
None of the diesel variants of the Alcazar come equipped with the panoramic whereas for the petrol variants, it is on offer from the second-from-base Prestige trim. The diesel variants also do not get a spare tyre. By removing these features, Hyundai has not only reduced prices of the diesel variants to keep it at par with the petrol, but it has also managed to save about 50kgs of weight. This has helped achieve a fuel economy of over 20kpl for the diesel variants, which is what customers value when buying a diesel. So, if efficiency is your priority and you can do without a sunroof, the diesel should be your ideal pick.
