IRVING, Texas -- The College Football Playoff management committee gained some clarity over details of the upcoming 12-team playoff and positioning of the Army-Navy game during two days of meetings, which concluded Wednesday. However, the group ultimately left without discussing many long-term key priorities, including expansion or auto-bid structure.
The board, made up of the 10 FBS conference commissioners and new Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua, primarily dealt with recapping the 2023 playoff and organizing logistics of the upcoming 12-team playoff. (One key commissioner was not present due to a family matter.) The discussion was deep in minutia and included everything from ref assignments to family travel budgets for players, which increased from $1.5 million to $7.5 million as the CFP increases from funding three to 11 games.

It doesn’t feel like too long ago that we were watching these 2024 NFL Draft prospects’ dads on the gridiron.
The inescapable march of time comes for us all, and what better time to remember our own mortality than the NFL Draft? With an ever-increasing number of NFL progeny entering the league we’re seeing the children of players who retired less than a decade ago trying to find a home in the NFL.
This 2024 NFL Draft class is headlined by three players who are the kids of former NFL players, with a few more later in the draft.
Marvin Harrison Jr., WR — Ohio State
Projected draft pick: Top 5.
You’d have to be living under a rock to make it this far in the process without hearing about Marvin Harrison Jr. He’s been on the draft radar for the last three years as one of the most vaunted receiver prospects since Randy Moss or Calvin Johnson.
Harrison Jr. has his dad’s elite route-running skills, but he’s more athletic than Pops was. A unicorn of a player, MHJ has the ability to make a quarterback better purely by the mismatches he creates on the outside.
You’re going to be hearing his name for a long time to come.
Frank Gore Jr., RB — Southern Mississippi
Projected draft pick: Priority UDFA.
A throwback three-down back, Frank Gore Jr. won in college with power rather than speed or finesse. In a lot of ways he’s a Jack of all trades, master of none, which hurts his draft position a lot.
Still, based on the name he’ll get a shot with a team and could find a home as a RB3.
Brenden Rice, WR — USC
Projected draft pick: 4th-5th round.
Son of the legendary Jerry Rice, Brenden has a shot to be a solid mid-round pick for a team. Transferring from Colorado to USC in 2023, Brenden finished his final year as a reliable weapon for Caleb Williams — catching 45 passes for 791 yards.
A solid-sized possession receiver like his dad, where Brenden lacks is as a polished route runner. Still, he finds ways to make plays and was a touchdown machine for the Trojans. He’ll be a solid day three pick.
Luke McCaffrey, WR — Rice
Projected draft pick: 4th-5th round.
Son of Broncos WR Ed McCaffrey and brother of Christian McCaffrey, Luke is a former QB-turned-WR who showed tremendous promise in a short period of time. There’s a lot of rough spots to his game as a receiver, but that could be a product of lack of reps at the position.
McCaffrey will likely be a Day 3 pick and he has more upside than most players selected in that range.
Kris Jenkins, DT — Michigan
Projected draft pick: 2nd round.
Son of former All-Pro DT Kris Jenkins who played for the Panthers and Jets, his son of the same name was a integral part of the Wolverines National Championship defense. A plus-level starter in the NFL, Kris is a disruptive player with good technique — but he lacks the ideal frame that would push him into the first round.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr., LB — Clemson
Projected draft pick: 4th-5th round.
Clemson linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr is the son of former Eagles linebacker who shares a name. He’s a solid tackling machine who has a natural knack for wrapping up players at the point of attack, and rarely takes bad angles in pursuit.
Trotter Jr. falls down the board a bit due to his lack of size, but there’s potential to become a reliable defensive player.

Without Jimmy Butler, the Heat are just a shell of themselves, even if they did beat the brakes off the Chicago Bulls in their play-in game to secure the final postseason spot. Sunday's game showed us exactly why the Celtics have been so dominant all season, and it didn't even feel like they had to put a ton of effort into the win.
Boston just put on a masterclass on both ends of the floor, and after its lead jumped to 34 points, it became apparent that Miami would be in store for a sweep if Butler didn't come back.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Doctors, hospitals and health insurance companies in California will be limited to annual price increases of 3% starting in 2029 under a new rule state regulators approved Wednesday in the latest attempt to corral the ever-increasing costs of medical care in the United States.
The money Californians spent on health care went up about 5.4% each year for the past two decades. Democrats who control California's government say that's too much, especially since most people's income increased just 3% each year over that same time period.

On Tuesday, the FTC voted to enact the ban on the basis that noncompete clauses stifle the efficiency of the labor market, hinder competition and can lead to higher prices for consumers. Noncompete agreements often prevent workers from pursuing other jobs in their industry, and the better pay those jobs would offer.

Getty Images Los Angeles Angels stalwart and star Mike Trout has become the first hitter to reach 10 home runs for the 2024 MLB season. Trout's 10th blast came in Wednesday's eventual 6-5 loss to the visiting Orioles. Here's a look at No. 10:
That homer, which came at the expense of a Dean Kremer fastball, left the bat at an impressive 114.5 mph and traveled 417 feet. As Sarah Langs notes, Trout now joins Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson as the only two players since 1900 to twice rack up at least 10 homers and five steals in their teams' first 25 games of a season. Eight of Trout's 10 homers this season have been of the solo variety, however, and he has only 13 RBI for the 10-15 Halos.

Of course this is the NBA, so we can't escape any fun times without a massive controversy. Sure enough, the league's Last Two Minute Report from the game provided all the fodder we could ask for.
The report showed that 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey was fouled -- not once, but twice -- during the inbound sequence in which he turned the ball over, eventually leading to Donte DiVincenzo's game-winning 3-pointer. In addition, the league said that a timeout could have been granted to Philadelphia coach Nick Nurse prior to the inbounds pass.

Naz Reid has won the NBA's 2023-24 Sixth Man of the Year award, the league announced Wednesday. Reid, a fifth-year big man for the Minnesota Timberwolves, is one of the most unlikely winners of the award in recent history. He is just the third center ever to win the award, joining Bill Walton in 1986 and Montrezl Harrell in 2020. Like Walton, Reid is the third big man on a team with two stars in its front-court: Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert.
Reid's ability to fit in with either of them made him the perfect fit for a Timberwolves team that had the NBA's best defense from wire-to-wire and needed every extra bit of offense it could find. Reid nearly matched Towns as a 3-point shooter this season, making 41.4% of his attempts, but when Gobert rested, he was a worthy defensive replacement that helped keep Minnesota afloat on that end of the floor. Still, Reid was treated as a long shot at most books throughout the season, with 30-to-1 lines available as late as January.

Last December, a factory in the Chinese province of Hebei called Donghua Jinlong posted a marketing video to TikTok showing aerial clips of its campus set to a jaunty tune. A caption proudly declared, in English, “Since 1979, Glycine comes from here.” Glycine is a niche industrial product, used as an additive in certain packaged foods and in chemical processes like pesticide production. It is, in other words, an unlikely candidate for a social-media campaign, yet the factory’s account kept giving the molecule the star treatment, like it was some sort of chemical influencer. The videos became more complex and ambitious. They featured bouncing animated text, A.I.-generated voice-overs, and so-called retention-editing tactics such as blurred transitions between clips. “A bunch of food grade glycine is being packed up feel free to inquire,” one post announced, solicitously. I stumbled upon the Donghua Jinlong videos in my TikTok feed late one night in March. The encounter felt a little bit like watching after-hours paid programming on TV: first bizarre, then vaguely amusing, then addictively hilarious. I almost wanted to place an order.
In the past few months, Donghua Jinlong’s videos have spiralled into an online joke. A TikTok from early March, explaining the uses of industrial-grade glycine and boasting of the company’s thirty-one patents, collected more than three hundred thousand views and many hundreds of ironically enthusiastic responses. Some commenters begged for a line of official Donghua Jinlong T-shirts. TikTok users began promoting Donghua Jinlong’s products of their own accord. One woman with only a few hundred followers posted a faux personality test asking, “Which glycine are you?”; it got more than two hundred and seventy thousand views. Another account, @gangstasportivik, posted factory footage overlaid with videos of the minor celebrity actor and “Red Scare” podcaster Dasha Nekrasova, with an A.I.-generated voice-over in Nekrasova’s reedy timbre extolling Donghua Jinlong’s glycine. Others recorded personal testimonials about how glycine sustained their American childhoods. Appreciative comments spilled over into different Chinese factories’ TikTok accounts. Donghua...
